Saharawi Artistic Fund (SAF): Art to improve refugees' lives

Through the Saharawi Artistic Fund (SAF) we cover travel costs, workshop materials and offer small living stipends for the workshop leaders in the camps, who usually donate their time and skills in exchange.

Since its creation in 2007, SAF has helped fund:
• (2009), introductory acting & film production classes led by Caravanserai Studio. See a post bout ths project in our blog here.
• (2009), 10-day master workshop for musicians, with Mohamed Hafsi, musician, composer and producer;
• (2009 and 2010), two 3-week workshops in crafts design from discarded plastic bottles, by Florie Salnot, Royal College of Arts, which resulted in the design project Plastic Gold. Shortlisted for the Jameel Prize 2013, Plastic Gold was exhibited at the Victoria & Albert Museum (London) from Dec 11, 2013 until April 21, 2014. Note: Florie is actively looking for ways to keep training Saharawi women in this technique; if you're interested in supporting her, please get in touch!
• (2010 and 2011), two-week long youth theatre workshop led by Olive Branch Theatre. Since then, the theatre group led by Becky Hall have been returning to the Saharawi refugee camps for further training workshops with the youth, the disabled and the victims of land mines. To get involved and/or support them, please get in touch!

Doing the workshops in the Saharawi refugee camps, thanks to Sandblast, contributed enormously to the development of my practice as a designer. The project helped me to define better what I was interested in as a designer by asking the question: “How can design be applied to go beyond aesthetics or technical innovation and address social problems and help invigorate traditions and cultural heritage?

The plastic bottles workshops brought me interest from journalists and enabled me to get a few freelance projects through the exposure I gained. I also got very valuable experience working with people through these workshops, which I have been enjoying a lot since then. It is a project I am always very proud to put in my portfolio as I know it’s going to impress and catch attention people's attention.
