What We Do

Home > About Us > What We Do

Since its beginnings in 2005, Sandblast has been involved in numerous projects in and out of the country, in the UK and in the refugee camps in Algeria.

Our projects and collaborations aim to achieve four things:

  1. Heightened awareness of the situation in Western Sahara and the sufferings of the Saharawi refugees;
  2. put the Saharawi culture on the map of international recognition;
  3. artistic development of Saharawi talent and the establishment of creative ties between the Saharawis and artists worldwide;
  4. cultural and economic empowerment of the Saharawi refugees.

The enduring invisibility of the Saharawi cause is a great challenge to the Saharawi pledge to execute their right to self-determination. Thus, we are convinced that our work should be about awareness-raising in the UK as much as about capacity-building in the Saharawi refugee camps.

In Summer 2010, Sandblast is involved in several fundraising and awareness-raising event. Read more and get involved.

We are proud to tell you about all our projects, large and small, and every project has its significance in the process of supporting the Saharawis to express themselves:

  • In the UK, Sandblast has worked with local artists – established and becoming – to create a network of voices and visions that impact the public discourse relating to the Saharawi cause;
  • In the camps, we hold workshops and trainings to develop artistic talent and facilitate the expression of their cultural identity through various media of communication.
